Iran-Syria ties crucial for region: Syrian official

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad on Monday stressed the importance of the friendly relations between Tehran and Damascus for the entire region.

He made the remarks after his meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on the sidelines of the foreign ministerial session of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which opened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday.

He added that during the meeting the two sides underlined the need for settlement of the problems facing the Muslim World including the challenges between Arabs and the Zionist regime.

Referring to the Islamic Republic of Iran as a major regional state, al-Miqdad reiterated that Tehran-Cairo relations would help counter the Zionist enemy.

He also called for negotiations for settlement of dispute between Iran and the United Arab Emirates on the three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf.
