Thai House Withdraws Casino Bill Amid Opposition Scrutiny

BANGKOK, July 9 (TNA) - The Thai House of Representatives on Wednesday voted 253 to 67 to withdraw a controversial bill on comprehensive entertainment complexes, including provisions for casinos, from its agenda.

The move followed a Cabinet request to pull the bill, which had been fast-tracked for consideration. Thai House Withdraws Entertainment Complex Bill

The decision to withdraw the bill prompted questions and demands for clear commitments from Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party and head of the opposition. He pressed for assurance that the move stemmed from genuine recognition of the bill's issues and a commitment to thorough review based on public feedback, rather than a tactical retreat due to a lack of votes, and urged the government to commit to not reintroducing the bill.

Julapun Amornvivat, Deputy Finance Minister and Cabinet representative, stated the withdrawal was primarily due to significant changes in the political landscape, particularly a recent Cabinet reshuffle involving many new ministers. He emphasized the need for the new Cabinet to thoroughly review the bill, acknowledging the diverse public opinions and the desire to reduce social conflict. However, he could not guarantee that the bill would not be brought back for future consideration. -819 (TNA)
