Thailand Proposes 'Chud Thai' for UNESCO Listing in 2026

BANGKOK, July 8 (TNA) - Thailand has officially nominated "Chud Thai: The Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Practices of the Thai National Costume" for UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2026. This move supports Thailand's soft power strategy and cultural preservation.

The nomination, which UNESCO confirmed for review in 2026, features the Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom (Royal Thai Dress). This iconic attire, initiated by Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother in 1960, has been on Thailand's national heritage list since 2023.

The Ministry stressed that UNESCO listings recognize cultural value, not ownership, promoting cooperation and diversity.

"Culture is a bridge, not a wall," stated the Permanent Secretary, emphasizing that the "Chud Thai" nomination proudly shares Thailand's heritage with the world. Thailand seeks public support for both "Chud Thai" (2026) and "Muay Thai" (2028) in their bids for international recognition. -819 (TNA)
