Fowler 'can't wait' for A-League season
Soccer legend Robbie Fowler says he can't wait to kick off the new A-League season
with the North Queensland Fury.
The ex-Liverpool star dismissed suggestions earlier this week he was seeking a move
back to his native England and is eagerly anticipating his first appearance for the
Fury against Sydney FC on August 8.
Speaking before going for a hot lap in Alex Davison's Ford at the V8 Supercar event
in Townsville on Friday, Fowler said nothing compared to the thrill of competitive
action.
"You play pre-season games and as much as you want to win them results are not the
be all and end all," he told AAP.
"The season's coming up and everyone's starting to get the butterflies in the
stomach and it's an exciting time.
"Obviously we have a bit of an indifferent start with various results but on the
plus side not every player has been available for selection.
"The manager's probably got a bit of a headache now with most of the players coming
back to fitness.
"He's still got a few players to come in so I think things are looking better now
than they were probably three or four weeks ago."
Fowler said he hadn't had too many problems with the north Queensland climate and
didn't think the heat would be a factor in the season ahead.
"I'm obviously looking a little bit red today but because I'm going in one of these
cars I thought I'd get a bit of colour before all this gets drained out of me," he
said before his V8 Supercar experience.
"I think people probably make more of it (the climate) than what it is to be fair.
As a player you play in hot countries and hot climates anyway so tend to get used to
them."
The former England international also said the arrival of his family in Townsville
would help him settle further, though he had enjoyed his time in Australia well so
far.
"I was quite settled anyway, the fact is I was over here for two months without
them," he said.
"Obviously I missed them immensely and the fact they are over here now helps a
little bit more but I was settled anyway and the fact is they're here which will
calm me down a little bit more."
