House Speaker Stresses the Importance of the Int'l Community's Support to Consolidate Stability in Iraq

Baghdad /NINA/- Parliament Speaker, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani stressed the importance of support from the international community, especially Britain, to consolidate stability in Iraq.  The Parliament Speaker's media office stated in a statement: "Al-Mashhadani received British Ambassador Irfan Siddiq at his official office today. During the meeting, they discussed relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them, in addition to discussing a number of important issues related to the security and political situation in the country.

According to the statement, Al-Mashhadani stressed "the importance of the support of the international community, especially friendly countries like the United Kingdom, to consolidate stability in Iraq, especially in light of the security and economic challenges facing the country." He emphasized that "the current phase requires greater cooperation and coordination at various levels, to serve common interests and strengthen the democratic process."

For his part, the British Ambassador expressed his country's support for the political process in Iraq, stressing "the British government's keenness to support Iraq in its development paths, institution-building, and efforts to conduct the upcoming elections, ensuring their integrity and transparency."

The statement continued: "The two sides discussed the most prominent challenges facing the Council of Representatives, particularly those related to its legislative and oversight role, and the need to move forward with the approval of a number of important draft laws that contribute to achieving reform and improving the level of services provided to citizens."

 At the conclusion of the meeting, Al-Mashhadani reiterated the importance of the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United Kingdom, calling for continued constructive dialogue on various issues of common interest./End
