ASEAN Ministerial Meeting will run smoothly: Thai defence minister

BANGKOK, July 9 (TNA) - Thai Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan expressed confidence that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting will run smoothly without any untoward incident as the Cabinet on Thursday approved enforcement of the Internal Security Act.

Thailand will host the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC) and the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) to be held in Phuket July 17-23.

The ASEAN Summit and related meetings in the eastern seaboard resort of Pattaya in April were cancelled under duress after the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) – popularly known as the Red Shirts -- stormed the meeting venue.

The Internal Security Act will be enforced in Phuket for a five-kilometre radius July 10-24, Gen. Prawit said, asserting that the Act would not negatively impact businesses in the province.

He said the combined number of civil, police and military security personnel would be suitable to ensure the safety and well-being of those attending the event.

The minister said all involved officials, particularly the townspeople of Phuket, had cooperated with the government. The use of force would depend on the situation but he believed the situation would be under control. (TNA)
