Britain sends baroness to Australia

Australia will have a new British High Commissioner by October.
Baroness Valerie Amos, a former Leader of the House of Lords, will take over from
High Commissioner Helen Liddell, who arrived in Australia in July, 2005.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised the job done by Ms Liddell, predicting
Ms Amos would further enhance the strong relationship between Australia and Britain.
"The relationship between the UK and Australia is unique and Prime Minister (Kevin)
Rudd is an exceptional friend," he said in a statement.
"Our shared history, culture and interests make this a powerful and important
partnership."
Mr Brown said Ms Amos would make an outstanding high commissioner.
"She will bring to the role energy, flair and experience," he said.
She will take up her appointment during October.
During her time in the House of Lords, Ms Amos was an Under Secretary of State at
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Government Whip and spokesperson on
International Development, Women's Issues and Social Security.
Following a change of administration in the United States, Australia is still
waiting for a new American ambassador to arrive.
Former ambassador Robert McCallum left Australia in January.
