On Behalf of the Foreign Minister, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Participates in Third Consultative Meeting on Enhancing Coordination of Peace Initiatives and Efforts for Sudan
Nouakchott, December 18, 2024, SPA -- On behalf of His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Engineer Waleed ElKhereiji, participated today in the third consultative meeting on enhancing coordination of peace initiatives and efforts for Sudan, held in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
In his speech, His Excellency affirmed that Saudi Arabia has led significant efforts to resolve the current crisis stemming from the Kingdom's responsibility toward the Sudanese people. The Kingdom, with the United States of America, hosted the conflicting parties in Sudan during the Jeddah Talks (1), which resulted in the signing of the Jeddah Declaration on “Commitment to Protecting Civilians in Sudan” and the signing of a short-term ceasefire agreement. The Kingdom also hosted the Jeddah Talks (2), which aim to achieve a sustainable political solution that preserves Sudan's security and stability, ensures the cohesion of its state institutions, and prevents their collapse.
His Excellency renewed the Kingdom’s emphasis on the importance of continuing coordination with Arab and Islamic countries and friendly states to halt the fighting in Sudan and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
His Excellency stated: “The Kingdom affirms that resolving the Sudanese crisis begins with stopping the fighting and enhancing humanitarian response for the Sudanese people. This should then pave the way for a future political process in Sudan that ensures its security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and independence while preventing external interference.” He added: “We also reiterate the necessity for both parties to the conflict to fulfill their commitments as stipulated in the Jeddah Declaration, particularly the commitment to protecting Sudanese civilians, signed on May 11, 2023. This is a forward step anticipated by both us and the Sudanese people, who continue to endure the devastation of this war daily.”
His Excellency noted the Kingdom’s welcoming of international efforts aimed at resolving the Sudanese crisis. He also praised the decision by the Sudanese Armed Forces to extend the opening of the Adré border crossing with Chad and to open the Kassala, Dongola, and El Obeid airports, as well as the Kadugli crossing, to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
