GEOSA Joins GEO to Advance Earth Observation at COP16
Riyadh, December 12, 2024, SPA -- The Saudi General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) announced in a news release its joining of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) to represent the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in organizing the sector of survey, geospatial information, and imaging in Saudi Arabia.
By joining GEO, GEOSA aims to enhance the role of geospatial information in creating smart solutions to address environmental challenges, reaching a promising integrated system in which science and emerging technologies combine towards a sustainable environment.
This development occurred during GEOSA President Dr. Eng. Mohammed Al-Sayel's participation in the high-level dialogue session “Healing our land through science and Earth Intelligence,” as part of the activity of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) being held in Riyadh from December 2 to 13.
GEO was formally established in 2005 by the Third Earth Observation Summit in Brussels, Belgium, and was intended to function as an international mechanism that encourages international cooperation to better understand all the aspects and complications of planet Earth.
According to the release, the group aims to foster connections among government bodies, academic institutions, research centers, data providers, private companies, scientists, and experts.
Bringing these diverse stakeholders together promotes a collaborative effort focused on developing innovative solutions to the global challenges of today, particularly concerning the environment and climate change.
GEO, the release said, is dedicated to enhancing international cooperation to mobilize efforts and resources, which will enable effective monitoring of the Earth and any changes that may impact it.
