Judd stars as Blues down Dockers
Carlton snapped a two-game losing streak and revived their finals hopes with a
15-point come-from-behind AFL victory over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
The Blues trailed by 36 points early in the second quarter and were still 18 points
in arrears at the final change, but booted seven goals to two in a dominant
last-quarter performance to steal the 16.19 (115) to 15.10 (100) win.
Carlton skipper Chris Judd (35 possessions, five scoring assists) was inspirational
in the second-half comeback, while fellow midfielder Bryce Gibbs (33 disposals, 10
inside 50s, two goals) and Andrew Carrazzo (33 disposals, two goals) provided
excellent support.
Brendan Fevola (three goals) was well blanketed by Chris Tarrant but Setanta
O'hAilpin continued his good run of form with 4.3.
The Blues' seventh win of the season lifts Brett Ratten's charges to seventh on the
table, while Fremantle (3-11) are in danger of earning the wooden spoon following
their seventh loss on the trot.
Luke McPharlin, who had endured a horrid month, provided a constant target up
forward to finish with three goals, including two in the crucial third quarter,
while small forward Hayden Ballantyne kicked three first-half goals.
Greg Broughton was excellent in defence while Paul Hasleby and Byron Schammer
provided the midfield grunt.
Fremantle came out with all guns blazing in the opening quarter, with their crisp
ball movement and sublime skills leaving Carlton chasing tail for much of the
stanza.
Carlton butchered possession time and again as the Dockers raced out to a 25-0 lead
after just 10 minutes.
And the Blues' ill discipline was also proving costly, with four 50m penalties
leading to three of Fremantle's goals.
Even a Carlton trainer was penalised for obstructing play as the Dockers ended the
term 28 points ahead.
The margin blew out to 34 points when Des Headland goalled early in the second term
but Bryce Gibbs, Jordan Russell, Chris Judd and Marc Murphy stopped the bleeding as
Carlton turned the tables in quick fashion.
The Blues booted six of the final eight goals of the term, including two each to
Fevola and O'hAilpin, to close the gap to 11 points at the long break.
Carlton continued their surge in the third quarter but failed to convert their
dominance on the scoreboard, posting a wayward 2.6 for the term.
In contrast, Fremantle made the most off their limited opportunities with 4.1 to
take a handy 18-point lead into the final change.
But led by a rampaging Judd, Carrazzo and Gibbs, Carlton were unstoppable in the
final term, with Judd's desperate tackle on Paul Duffield leading to the sealing
goal from O'hAilpin.
