ASEAN Sec-Gen, Thai PM Discuss Transnational Crime, Prisoner Education Initiatives

BANGKOK, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn paid a courtesy call on Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Tuesday to discuss cooperation against transnational crime and initiatives to support prisoner education to reduce recidivism.

Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap said the Prime Minister welcomed Kao, highlighting the meeting as an opportunity to review past achievements and set future goals, particularly in policies addressing transnational crime and social issues.

"During the discussion, both sides recognised the growing threat of cybercrime, especially online fraud and the misuse of technology, which has become a pressing issue for many ASEAN countries, including Thailand," Jirayu said in a statement on Tuesday.

Jirayu added that Paetongtarn emphasised the need for comprehensive measures to combat cybercrime across all sectors and welcomed ASEAN's support in addressing this challenge.

"The two sides also discussed strategies for tackling drug-related issues, with the Prime Minister underscoring that this is an urgent priority for Thailand and other countries in the region," he said.

Paetongtarn highlighted the importance of providing educational opportunities for prisoners to aid their reintegration into society, reduce recidivism, and enable former prisoners to return as productive members of the community.

Kao expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s hospitality and commended Thailand’s active role within ASEAN, particularly in public health.

He also praised the Prime Minister's dedication to prisoner education, acknowledging its impact in transforming prisoners into responsible citizens, which aligns with ASEAN’s priorities.

Earlier, during his two-day working visit to Thailand starting Tuesday (Nov 5), Kao also met with Thai Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong and secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanurat Lukboon.

He also visited the Royal Thai Police, hosted by Acting Deputy Commissioner-General Pol. Lt. Gen. Prachuap Wongsuk.
