Lions lose to Port by 48 points
Brisbane utility Jared Brennan faces a headbutt charge after inexplicably snapping
during his side's 48-point loss to Port Adelaide.
Brennan was charged with headbutting Power onballer Josh Carr in the last quarter of
Port's convincing 19.14 (128) to 11.14 (80) triumph at AAMI Stadium.
The Lion threw Carr to the ground on the members wing as players awaited a centre
bounce early in the final term.
Shortly after being penalised, Brennan walked at Carr and headbutted his opponent,
sending the Power player from the field with a cut eye.
Brennan's brain fade was a low point in a fluctuating contest featuring a match
defining four-goal haul to Port forward Brett Ebert.
Ebert, Justin Westhoff (three goals), Robbie Gray (three goals) and former skipper
Warren Tredrea (two goals) formed the platform of Port's victory before 20,293
spectators.
Brisbane trio Albert Proud, Jonathon Brown and Daniel Bradshaw each kicked two goals.
The visitors trailed by seven points at three quarter-time, sneaking back into the
game after Port produced a season-best 8.1 quarter in the second stanza to take a
20-point halftime lead.
Ebert and Tredrea feasted on opportunities from a dominant midfield, headed by
clearance king David Rodan, the poise of Peter Burgoyne and Kane Cornes' relentless
running.
The onballers capitalised on a ruck dominance of Dean Brogan and Brendon Lade as the
Power registered four goals in the initial 11 minutes of the second quarter to scoot
to a 21-point lead.
Brisbane's big guns Jonathon Brown and Daniel Bradshaw then shared three rapid fire
replies in three minutes as the Lions closed the gap to a point.
Those three majors were much welcomed by the visitors, who to that stage had
squandered many goalscoring chances in recording an inaccurate 2.7.
The Lions' comeback, triggered by Justin Sherman who had 23 touches to halftime, was
short-lived as Port's Ebert and Tredrea combined for a batch of three goals which
gave the hosts a 20-point advantage at the long break.
When Power wingman Danyle Pearce sunk a 50m bomb to open the third quarter scoring,
Port jumped to a game high 26-point lead and were seemingly in control.
But the Lions persisted and three late goals brought them within striking distance,
until Brennan's indiscretion gifted Port the momentum which carried the Power to the
last six goals of the game and a comprehensive victory.
