AANZ Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur to Address Regional Geopolitical Challenges

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The 16th ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand (AANZ) Dialogue is set to take place here from Oct 22 to 24, providing a pivotal platform to address pressing regional geopolitical challenges.

The dialogue comes on the heels of the ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Laos, in early October and will feature informal discussions aimed at fostering collaboration between ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand, according to a statement shared by the Australian High Commission with Bernama.

Hosted by Asialink, ISIS Malaysia, and the Asia New Zealand Foundation, it will serve as a unique forum for the exchange of ideas, fostering understanding, building trust and promoting cooperation between think tanks, academics and industry experts.

Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke, highlighted the significance of the dialogue, particularly as Australia will mark its 70th year of diplomatic presence in Malaysia in 2025.

“This dialogue provides an opportunity to discuss how Australia can continue working with Malaysia and ASEAN partners to support Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship year,” she said in the statement.

With ASEAN-Australia relations marking their 50th anniversary this year, Australian ambassador to ASEAN, Tiffany McDonald, emphasised the importance of engaging a wide range of stakeholders.

“The 16th AANZ Dialogue presents a timely opportunity to reflect on how ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand can work together to shape the region’s future,” she added.

High-level representatives, including government officials, academics and private sector leaders, will engage in discussions focusing on regional resilience, the impact of the US elections on the Indo-Pacific, and the evolving geopolitical landscape.

Among the key topics of the dialogue are the implications of demographic changes, investment in inclusive policies, and migration and workforce challenges, all of which are relevant as ASEAN nations face increasing security and economic complexities.

The dialogue will feature prominent leaders, including New Zealand's ambassador to ASEAN, Stuart Calman, and experts who will contribute to discussions on regional security, climate change and artificial intelligence.
