GCC Committed to Sustainable Development, Enhancing International Security and Stability, Says Albudaiwi

New York, September 24, 2024, SPA -- Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi underscored the importance of the Summit of the Future “at this critical time” and the need to increase international cooperation to address global challenges and achieve peace and sustainable development.
Speaking at the summit yesterday, at the UN in New York, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Albudaiwi said that the Summit of the Future represents an opportunity to reaffirm common principles and strengthen joint action through more effective and impactful multilateral frameworks, particularly in light of challenges affecting global sustainable development.
He pointed out that international indicators show a slowdown in the implementation of sustainable development goals, with more than 30% of them showing little progress. However, the GCC countries have prioritized sustainable development through national visions and joint GCC action plans, reflecting their commitment to fulfilling the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
Albudaiwi highlighted the developmental role of the GCC countries, through international partnerships and the provision of humanitarian assistance to over 90 countries.
He also underscored the need to find a just solution to the Palestinian cause, in accordance with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.
He stressed the need to strengthen the international community to meet the needs of current and future generations, and called for concerted efforts to keep pace with developments and ensure that these needs are met. Furthermore, he said that GCC is ready to cooperate with all parties to implement the recommendations given at the Summit of the Future.
Albudaiwi said GCC and the Pact for the Future have similar views on security and peace, and that GCC recently launched its vision for regional security, which aligns with that of the Pact for the Future and aims to achieve international peace and security.
