Japan helps Kyrgyzstan to modernize systems at two airports

An agreement was signed to modernize systems at the Manas and Issyk-Kul airports, the Finance Ministry reported.

According to the ministry, Exchange Notes and a Grant Agreement were signed between the Minister of Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic Almaz Baketaev, Ambassador of Japan to the Kyrgyz Republic Hideki Goda and the Permanent Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Kyrgyz Republic Hiroyuki Kawamato on the project "Improvement of Air Traffic Management Facilities at International Airports" for a total of 2 billion 153 million Japanese yen (about 13.8 million US dollars).

The project is aimed at reconstructing the control tower at the Osh airport and modernizing systems at the Manas and Issyk-Kul airports. The equipment of control towers and air traffic control centres, over the course of 50 years, has deteriorated significantly, and there is an urgent need to update the air traffic control system. This assistance will contribute to improving the safety of operation and the capacity of aircraft, and by increasing the efficiency of the aviation industry, will contribute to maintaining the transport infrastructure and regional communications.
