PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan will embark on an official visit to Turkmenistan from Sept 9 to 10 to further cement diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Sunday, said Mohamad is scheduled to pay a courtesy call to the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

He will also deliver a letter of invitation from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for Berdimuhamedov to undertake an official visit to Malaysia in December 2024.

“In Ashgabat, the foreign minister will hold a bilateral meeting with Vice President and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, to discuss economic relations, education, tourism, and technical cooperation between the two countries,” the statement read.

The Foreign Ministry said that Mohamad is also expected to call on National Leader of the People’s Council of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Mohamad’s visit will be preceded by the 5th Bilateral Consultation between Malaysia and Turkmenistan at the Senior Officials’ level on Sept 9.

In 2023, Turkmenistan was Malaysia’s fourth-largest trading partner among Central Asian countries, with a total trade value of RM48.62 million (US$10.57 million).
