Domain Name of Former Govt Website Used by Third Party

Tokyo, Sept. 6 (Jiji Press)--The internet domain name of a now-defunct website operated by the Japanese government has been acquired by a third party and is being used for a website introducing various job placement sites, Jiji Press learned Friday.

The domain name "tw-sodan.jp" was originally used for a website for telework consultation services by the health and communications ministries. The website was shut down at the end of fiscal 2022, and the services are now offered on a new website with the domain name "go.jp," which indicates websites related to the Japanese government.

However, links to the previous website remain on several central and local government websites. "We should have thoroughly checked and deleted (the links)," a health ministry official said. "We will strengthen our domain management and take measures to prevent a recurrence."

Jiji Press requested comment from the current owner of the domain name in question, a company based in the central city of Nagoya, but has not received a response.

In a past case, the domain name for a former health ministry website related to the COVID-19-pandemic was put up for online auction and sold to a third party.

According to Japan Registry Services Co., which registers and manages domain names in Japan, those ending with ".jp" expire a year after registration unless renewal procedures are completed.

Expired domain names are sometimes sold and purchased through online auctions by companies acting as domain registration intermediaries.

Guidelines compiled by the National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity call for the use of the domain name "go.jp" when government ministries and agencies launch websites.

Internet consultant Masahiro Tsuji said that the number of malicious fake websites is increasing, due in part to the development of generative artificial intelligence. "For security, I recommend the use of domain names that can only be obtained by certain organizations," Tsuji said.
