Mediacorp's TODAY Digital Newsroom To Merge With CNA From Oct 1

By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz

SINGAPORE, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Singapore’s Mediacorp is merging the newsroom of its digital media outlet, TODAY, with CNA effective Oct 1 in a move to strengthen the latter as the most trusted news source in the republic.

Mediacorp said TODAY is set to evolve into CNA’s digital long-form weekend magazine, focusing on producing analytical features on current issues under the well-regarded Big Read brand, ground up news features, and engaging human interest interviews, as well as opinion pieces.

The company said the merger will not result in any staff cuts as all the staff members of TODAY will be offered roles in CNA.

“This merger will allow the best of TODAY – its high-quality original journalism – to be served via CNA’s digital platform to the significantly larger CNA audience both in Singapore and overseas.

“This will help to grow CNA’s traffic and deepen its engagement, particularly on weekends,” it said in a statement, Wednesday.

The TODAY app and website will no longer be updated from Oct 1 and all its new content will be found on the CNA website and app. However, TODAY will retain its social media pages, it said.

TODAY, first launched in late 2000 as a newspaper, became the second-most widely read daily newspaper in the republic, across all languages within six years.

In 2017, it became the first newspaper in Singapore to embrace a fully digital future, as it discontinued its print edition.
