Thailand confirms two more A(H1N1) virus deaths
BANGKOK, July 1 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) confirmed on Wednesday two more fatalities from influenza A(H1N1), raising the country's death toll from the new virus strain to five.
Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai told reporters that the first death of the day was 15-year-old girl in Chonburi province who died at 10.45 am at a hospital in Chonburi.
The patient contracted the A(H1N1) flu while suffering brain tumour, diabetes and blood-related diseases.
An hour later, a 45-year-old man, a cleaner in a Bangkok department store who had contracted the H1N1 virus, died with heart and acute renal failure complications at Rajavithi Hospital.
Mr. Witthaya however said health officials will meet on Friday to review the efficiency of the current A(H1N1) preventive measures.
Cleaning and janitorial service companies are also being asked to meet with health officials to be briefed about the preventive measure against the new virus strain as cleaners are now considered to be risk carriers.
Dr. Paichit Varachit, MOPH Deputy Permanent-Secretary, said there is another severe case of A(H1N1) male patient who is now under surveillance at a hospital in Chonburi.
The health official expressed concern that there is another obstacle of further study on the A(H1N1), as autopsies have not been allowed by the victims' families in all five fatalities.
The Public Health Ministry earlier Wednesday confirmed 59 new cases of influenza A(H1N1), with the country's cumulative number of virus diagnoses rising to 1,473 cases, but 1,448 patients have already been discharged, with only 22 now remaining in hospital.
The World Health Organization on Monday reported a cumulative total of A(H1N1) cases across the world at 70,893, so far resulting in 311 deaths. (TNA)
