Malaysia-Based Think Tank Gets Authorisation to Observe UK Polls
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Asia Middle East Centre for Research and Dialogue (AMEC), a premier think tank based here, has received accreditation from the British Electoral Commission to be an observer for the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled for July 4.
AMEC, in its statement on Monday, said the accreditation is for its Democracy and Transparency Initiative.
“This remarkable achievement marks the first time a Malaysian foreign policy think tank has been authorised to observe British elections, underscoring AMEC's growing influence and steadfast commitment to promoting democratic values on a global scale,” it said.
AMEC said at the helm of such a prestigious election observation mission is director of the Democracy and Transparency Initiative, Muad Mohamad Zaki, a distinguished Maldivian political figure who has made significant contributions to the establishment of democracy in the Maldives.
His impressive credentials include advanced studies in International Relations and Security in the United Kingdom and serving as the youngest head of relations for the Maldivian Democratic Party to the UK and European Union, it added.
Joining him is Ahmed Farih Mohamed, a prominent Maldivian diplomat and entrepreneur, whose extensive experience in international relations further bolsters AMEC's global engagement and research-based understanding of democratic values and cultural differences.
AMEC said its election observation team has arrived in the UK to monitor the upcoming British Parliamentary Elections on July 4.
“Our observers are ready and available to provide expert insights on the UK election. This initiative exemplifies AMEC's unwavering dedication to promoting democratic values worldwide, including in Western nations,” it said.
AMEC noted that it remains committed to championing the principles of open governance, fair elections, and accountable institutions, continuously striving to contribute to a more just and equitable world.
The accreditation by the British Electoral Commission stands as a testament to AMEC's dedication to these ideals and its capacity to operate at the highest levels of international electoral observation, it said.
