Gillard makes surprise Baghdad visit
Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has made a surprise visit to Baghdad at the end
of her tour of the Middle East.
Ms Gillard travelled to Iraq following visits to Israel and the Palestinian
territories, as well as the United States.
In Iraq, Ms Gillard signed a number of commercial agreements between Australia and
Iraq, as well as meeting diggers who are winding up their tour of duty.
The remaining Australian troops are due to pull out of Iraq by July 30, leaving only
a security detachment to guard the Australian embassy in Baghdad.
She met military personnel in both Baghdad and Kuwait.
The deputy prime minister met Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Malaki and his deputy,
Rafi Al-Issawi.
She signed six agreements with Mr Al-Issawai that covered a variety of bilateral
issues.
It follows Mr Al-Malaki's visit to Australia in March, where the two countries
agreed to take the relationship to a new commercial phase.
"This historic agreement reflects Australia's commitment to support and assist the
government of Iraq in its efforts to strengthen democracy and rebuild Iraq," Ms
Gillard said in a statement.
The agreements include a commitment to greater collaboration in agriculture and
public health, more trade cooperation and the promotion of linkages in the resources
and energy sector.
