Soldier dies at Puckapunyal army base
A soldier has died after an armoured personnel carrier in which he was travelling
rolled during training exercises at the Puckapunyal army base north of Melbourne.
The 26-year-old was killed when the M113A1 tracked carrier carrying four soldiers
rolled at approximately 11am (AEST) on Friday, the defence department said.
The vehicle's driver was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with possible spinal
injuries. His condition has been downgraded from serious to stable.
"Our deepest condolences go out to families and friends of the soldiers involved in
this tragic accident, and we are doing everything we can to assist and support them
through this very difficult time," the department said in a statement.
The army is assisting police in investigating the accident but says it will not
speculate on the cause of the incident until the investigation has been completed.
Personal details of the soldiers were not released.
