69 new H1N1 cases confirmed; 200 suspected Thai navy cases
BANGKOK, June 25 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Thursday confirmed 69 new cases of influenza A(H1N1), raining the country’s cumulative total to 1,054 virus patients.
Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nopamornbhodi, said that among the 1,054 H1N1 flu patients, 1,037 have fully recovered and returned home, while only 17 remain in hospital.
Regarding the 200 naval personnel showing flu-like symptoms, the deputy minister said that they have been quarantined and are being treated in two Navy hospitals, awaiting laboratory test results.
Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Kamthorn Pumhirun said that a 4,000-man naval personnel training unit attended a training camp at Sattahip in Chonburi province, but about 200 were placed under quarantine after experiencing fever.
"Among the 200 suspected (H1N1) cases, seven out of ten have flu-like symptoms. Two showing severe symptoms were sent to intensive care," the Navy chief said.
Admiral Kamthorn said that the naval personnel are normally posted to various departments and duties after training, but the plan was temporarily suspended after 5 per cent of the trainee unit developed flu-like symptoms.
The Navy chief added that the suspected cases were put under surveillance at Sattahip Naval Base's Abhakorn-kiatiwong Hospital and at the Queen Sirikit Hospital in Chonburi.
He said hygienic face masks were issued to relatives who come to visit the trainees at the base, but the Navy is considering suspending the visits, as the sources of the flu has not yet been identified.
Admiral Kamthon also instructed the Naval Education Department to set preventive measures in place at Naval schools including the Naval Rating School and the Naval Academy to prevent the spread of virus. (TNA)
