Toray to Set Up Water Treatment R&D Center in Singapore

Singapore, June 24 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Toray Industries Inc.
<3402> said Wednesday it will set up a water treatment technology research
and development center in Singapore.
Toray Water Technology Laboratory, set to begin operations in
September, will be located within the premises of Nanyang Technological
University's Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, Toray's
partner.
Toray's R&D center and the Nanyang institute will conduct joint
research into the mechanism by which reverse osmosis membranes are
contaminated during water treatment, in order to develop technologies to
prevent such contamination.
Toray's center will start with a staff of five, rising to 30 within
five years.
At a signing ceremony, Toray Director Tadahiro Uemura said the
company's ties with the university, which is known for its strong edge in
water treatment and membrane-related technologies, will help improve its
products even more.
The Singapore R&D center will be Toray's third, following ones in
Japan and China. The Japanese firm plans to invest 10 million Singapore
dollars in the new facility over five years.
