The President Discusses With A UN Official Ways To Enhance Cooperation Between Iraq And UNHCR To Provide Services To Refugees And Displaced Persons

Baghdad / NINA / -The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, discussed with a UN official ways to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the High Commissioner to provide services to refugees and displaced persons.

The Presidency's media office said in a statement, "The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received today, Sunday, at Baghdad Palace, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jean-Nicolas Boz, and the accompanying delegation, in the presence of the Minister of Immigration and Displacement, Ivan Faiq Jabru."

The statement added, "During the meeting, ways were discussed to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the High Commissioner in a way that supports continuing efforts to provide services to refugees and displaced persons and reduce the burdens on them."

Rashid stressed, "Iraq looks forward to more cooperation and coordination with the Commission, and providing the necessary care for groups that have been exposed to violence, threats, and forced displacement."

The President of the Republic pointed out the importance of supporting the Commission and the international community for the Iraqi government’s decision to close the displacement camps, stressing the need to intensify the efforts made by the international organizations working in Iraq to resolve the issue of the displaced and end their tragic conditions that have extended for several years, and to take practical and immediate steps to create the necessary conditions for their return to their areas after providing a security and service environment, and promoting common civil coexistence among all.

He added that Iraq hosts a significant number of refugees in the country, stressing full care to meet all their health and service needs.

He pointed out the need for UNHCR to intensify its field visits to know the conditions of refugees and study the situation in order to provide them with better care at the present time.

The President renewed Iraq's firm commitment to applying human rights principles and ensuring respect for all international agreements in this regard, stressing the need for international organizations to make more efforts to resolve the issue of the displaced once and for all.

For his part, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees expressed his appreciation and thanks for Iraq’s efforts in providing services and meeting the needs of refugees and forcibly displaced persons, stressing that the Commission supports strengthening cooperation and coordination with the Iraqi authorities in addressing and resolving this file once and for all./End
