AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023/ Qatar Coach Riding High with Last-16 Advance, Group A Lead

Doha, January 17 (QNA) - Qatar coach Marquez Lopez is riding high with his side's last-16 advance after midfielder Akram Afif gave the hosts a 1-0 lead over Tajikistan in their second group A match of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, on Wednesday.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Spaniard said the defending champions' pass to the knock-outs after only two group stage matches affirms the players' great work so far and motivates for a better performance in the coming games.
Lopez, who was only hired in early December, added he would make some changes to the starting lineup in the third group stage encounter against China to offer some players a greater opportunity to participate, yet he stressed his men's desires to continue the winning streak.
Today's three points put the Maroons atop Group A after they defeated Lebanon 3-0 in the opening match at the iconic Lusail Stadium, on Friday. In the same group, China and Lebanon played out a goalless draw.
Lopez hailed Afif, who was named man of the match against Lebanon and Tajikistan by virtue of his overwhelming performance, describing him as a superstar who can make the difference and helps take his side to realize their coveted dreams. (QNA)
