BANGKOK, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Thailand stands ready to initiate close cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to create sustainable food security across the globe.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said the country has expertise in these areas, and as a member country of FAO, Thailand is eager to share and exchange its knowledge with other countries for that purpose.
“Thailand stands ready to raise awareness about the importance of soil resources, apply technologies and innovations to enhance agricultural productivity, and promote sustainable food security at the national, regional, and global levels,” he said.
His statement followed a courtesy call from the director-general of the FAO Dr Qu Dongyu at the Government House on Tuesday.
In a statement, Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said Qu thanked Srettha and the Thai government’s continued support to FAO and its Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) in Bangkok.
Chai said Qu also affirmed the UN agency’s confidence to work together with Thailand to promote technical and academic exchange in a bid to elevate cooperation with Thailand on environmental development, agriculture, and water and soil resource management.
Chai said Thailand and FAO are forging a collaboration to combat the challenges of climate change and ensure food security for the nation.
Concerning cooperation in the application of technology for climate change mitigation, he said both parties are well aware of the importance for Thailand to adapt to a changing climate, which has impacted the country’s agricultural productivity and become a threat to food security.
“The FAO has proposed collaboration in applying innovation and technology, as well as exchanging knowledge and techniques for capacity building, to enhance the country’s agricultural productivity amidst climate change,” he said in a statement.
