Joko Widodo visits Tokyo for ASEAN-Japan and AZEC Summits

JAKARTA, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo departs for Tokyo on Saturday for a working visit to attend three main agendas at the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit.

He will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida before jointly leading the summit and attending the inaugural Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Summit.

“Japan is an important and strategic partner for Indonesia and ASEAN,” said Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, in a press conference before departure, here.

In the meeting with Kishida, he will discuss cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, infrastructure, energy transition, critical minerals, and maritime affairs.

At the summit, leaders will discuss strengthening the partnership between ASEAN and Japan, covering topics like the green economy, digital transformation, and the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

Both leaders will then lead the 50th-anniversary celebration of the ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation with the theme ‘Golden Friendship, Golden Opportunity’.

Jokowi will emphasise the spirit of inclusive collaboration to achieve emission-free regions during the AZEC Summit, which will be attended by leaders from Japan, Australia, and ASEAN member countries.

AZEC, a platform of Asian countries promoting decarbonisation with Japan’s support, launched during the G20 Bali in 2022.

Indonesia secured priority funding of US$500 million through AZEC to implement energy transition programmes and boost collaboration in public-private decarbonisation efforts.
