Mitsubishi to Participate in Aussie Clean Power Plant Project

Tokyo, June 22 (Jiji Press)--Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.
<7011> said Monday it will participate in a project in Australia to build a
next-generation power plant with a carbon capture and storage facility.

The Japanese company will join Japanese trader Mitsubishi Corp.
<8058> and ZeroGen Pty., owned by the Australian state of Queensland, in
constructing a coal-fired thermal power plant using integrated gasification
combined cycle (IGCC) technology.
The 530-megawatt plant, set to begin operations in 2015, will be
the world's first commercial IGCC plant with a carbon capture and storage
facility.
It will generate power by burning fuel obtained through the
gasification of fine-milled coal.
Carbon dioxide produced in the combustion will be collected and
stored deep under the ground. As a result, carbon emissions are expected to
be some 90 pct less than those of existing coal-fired thermal power plants.
Mitsubishi Heavy will be the exclusive manufacturer, supplier and
builder of the IGCC plant and the carbon capture and storage facility. The
company is expected to gain revenue of some 200 billion yen from the
project.
