Jetro to Promote Speciality Products from Japan's Shimonoseki In Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- The Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro) is collaborating with the city of Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture to promote its speciality products, such as pufferfish, seafood and sake, in Malaysia.
In a statement, Jetro said a business matching session was held today, together with food tasting, for restaurant chefs and buyers.
According to the International Fugu Association, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Australia, and Russia are the five countries in which Japanese pufferfish can be exported.
“Malaysia is the only free trading country for Japanese pufferfish across the world,” said the Japanese trade organisation.
During the business matching session, Shimonoseki vice-mayor Kitajima Yohei said Japan’s long history of detoxification made its pufferfish safe for consumption.
The export value of agricultural, forestry, fishery and food products from Japan to Malaysia has tripled in five years, recording the highest growth rate among the top 20 countries and regions in terms of export value in 2022.
“As the average age of the (Malaysian) population is young, further expansion of the market for Japanese food is expected, making Malaysia a promising market for Shimonoseki companies,” Jetro added.
