Russia, Mongolia back to discussing use of Mir payment cards — Deputy PM

ULAANBAATAR, October 23. /TASS/. Russia and Mongolia have resumed negotiations on the use of the Mir card for non-cash payment for goods and services, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko said after a meeting of the intergovernmental Russian-Mongolian commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation.

"The possibility of non-cash payment for goods and services by Russian tourists using Mir cards or alternative payment ways remains an important issue for the development of tourism. We have also returned to the discussion of this issue," she said.

In February 2023, the head of the department for coordination of tourism policy at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, Tuksgrlin Munkh-Od, said that cards of Russia’s Mir payment system could soon be used for payments in Mongolia. The country's authorities have almost completed preparatory work with local banks, he added.

In 2018, Belarus and Kazakhstan became first countries whose banks began accepting Mir cards. Currently, this Russian payment system operates in approximately 10 countries, and more than 15 countries have expressed their readiness to implement it.
