Saudi Businessman elected to MIT Governing Body
Riyadh, June 21, SPA -- Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel has become the
first Saudi and the first Arab to be elected to the governing body of
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Jameel’s appointment and membership to the MIT governing body, which
is a board of trustees known as the Corporation, is effective July 1.
The MIT Corporation elected nine term members and three life members
at its quarterly meeting held last June.
Jameel has become the first Arab to be elected to the Board of
Trustees of this world-class educational institution, which has since
its inception in 1865 generated 73 Nobel Prize winners, according to
a report published today by Arab News.
MIT aims to advance knowledge and educate students in science,
technology and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the US
and the world at large in the 21st century.
Jameel received his BS in civil engineering from MIT in 1978. He is
the president of Abdul Latif Jameel Co. Ltd., which was founded by
his father in 1945, and the president of Abdul Latif Jameel Community
Services Programs.
