Gallop wants peace at Manly as CEO quits
NRL chief executive David Gallop hopes Manly can end their internal struggles after
Sea Eagles boss Grant Mayer quit the club on Wednesday.
Mayer has reportedly decided to step down as the club's chief executive in mid-July
after months of in-fighting between factions aligned with the club's co-owners Scott
Penn and Max Delmege.
His resignation was expected to be confirmed at a board meeting on Wednesday night.
Gallop hopes Mayer's decision will signal the beginning of the end of the boardroom
fighting at the NRL premiers.
"Obviously Manly have got some internal issues and I think everyone would like to
see some peace in relation to that," Gallop told AAP.
"We wish Grant good luck in whatever he chooses to do in the future and if he's
looking for a future in the game then we wish him good luck in that as well."
Mayer is the latest club boss to step down in recent weeks, following the departures
of Parramatta's Denis Fitzgerald, Cronulla's Tony Zappia and the Wests Tigers' Scott
Longmuir.
Despite the number of top jobs now vacant in the game, Mayer denied he was leaving
the Sea Eagles to join another NRL club.
"Speculation that I will re-appear at another club is off target - I have no
intentions of joining another club at this stage," Mayer told News Limited.
Mayer's tenure at the club has been a successful one despite the boardroom split,
with the club winning last year's premiership and the world club championship in
March.
Increased sponsorship and improvements to the club's Brookvale Oval home also
boosted the Sea Eagles' fortunes under Mayer.
Penn and Delmege were unavailable for comment on the issue.
