Australia`s last WWI digger laid to rest
Australia's oldest man and the nation's last World War I serviceman has been laid to
rest.
Jack Ross, who died last week at the age of 110, was honoured by his family, his
friends and Victorian Premier John Brumby in Bendigo, where the secret to his long
and largely healthy life was revealed.
"He put it down to good luck, good living, good eating and no booze," said Father
Paul Blacker.
Mr Brumby described Mr Ross as a figure from an age that, regrettably, had passed.
"We don't make people like Jack Ross anymore," Mr Brumby said.
"But we should."
Mr Ross didn't see active service, enlisting in the army as an 18-year-old in the
final months of the war.
He had intended joining his brother Harrie in the trenches in France.
But after Harrie was wounded, their mother only allowed him to enlist on the
condition he served in the wireless and telegraph section.
Mr Ross also enlisted in WWII, but again he didn't leave Australia.
He died peacefully in his sleep at the Golden Oaks Nursing Home in Bendigo.
