Govt and unions in fake war: opposition
The Rudd government's showdown with unions over plans to keep a building industry
watchdog are part of a phoney war, the opposition says.
Workplace Relations Minister Julia Gillard was heckled at the ACTU congress in
Brisbane last week as delegates protested against government proposals to give its
new industrial body - Fair Work Australia - power over the construction industry.
The government's plan to keep the Australian Building and Construction Commission
going for up to another year was not a sign Labor wanted long term reform of the
construction sector, opposition frontbencher Scott Morrison said on Wednesday.
"I think this is a phoney war, frankly," he told Sky News.
Unions want the construction industry commission, established by the previous Howard
government, scrapped completely.
