Three new Influenza A (H1N1) cases confirmed in Thailand
BANGKOK, June 9 (TNA) – Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday confirmed three new Type A Influenza (H1N1) virus patients, all of whom had recently returned from the United States, raising the number of the country’s new cases to 13.

Thailand on Monday confirmed the country’s 10th H1N1 flu case, a 20-year-old woman.

Dr. Prat Boonyawonsviroj, Permanent-Secretary for Public Health, said the 11th case was a 20-year-old woman who had visited in the US for summer courses since March. She returned to Thailand in early June and was admitted to a hospital after having a flu-like symptom.

Initial laboratory tests showed that the woman had contracted the new A(H1N1) virus strain. Five people who reportedly had close contact with the patient have been under health ministry surveillance, Dr. Prat said.

The 12th A (H1N1) flu patient, a woman, returned to Thailand on June 5 and was admitted to hospital two days later.

Dr. Prat said six people having close contact to her have been closely monitored. Both Type A (H1N1) infected patients however were recovering well and had been allowed to return.

The third case confirmed on Tuesday was a 30-year-old man who had been working in both the US and Canada. The results of first initial lab test was unclear, so health officials conducted a second test which showed the patient to be infected, Dr. Prat said.

He said 19 people are currently under close observation by health officials.

He added that the ministry would invite tour operators offering overseas study tours or summer courses for students to meet and discuss further preventive measures, as numerous Thai students are returning to Thailand in the weeks ahead. (TNA)
