Thailand confirms first human-to-human transmission of A (H1N1)
BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) -- Thai Public Health Ministry officials on Thursday confirmed the first human-to-human case of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the kingdom to eight.
Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kajornprasart told a press conference after chairing a meeting on the virus that a 19-year-old man whose mother had returned from a trip to the United States on May 25, had contracted the disease. He became infected due to close contact with his mother, making him the first case in Thailand country to contract the virus through human-to-human transmission.
The man did not accompany his mother on the trip.
Sanan said that the 50-year-old mother had fully recovered after receiving treatment in hospital.
Two other new cases are also both women who had travelled to the United States and returned home recently, said Sanan.
Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said he expected that influenza A virus would continue spreading in Thailand. His ministry would cooperate with the Education Ministry in a bid to control the spread of the disease as many young Thai students had been abroad to study.
Educational institutions will have to ask students suspected of contracting the virus to stay home and receive treatment, in order to prevent any spread among fellow students, he said. (TNA)
