Drivers urged to dob in service stations
Motorists are being urged to dob in service stations overcharging for petrol over
the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
Motoring group NRMA says prices in Sydney's metropolitan area should not exceed an
average of $1.28 per litre, and stations charging more than $1.33 per litre are
ripping customers off.
It wants drivers who see unleaded fuel at higher levels to report this to its
www.roadtube.com.au website.
"It's important that we work together to make sure Australian families don't get
overcharged at the pump, and so we are calling on all Australian motorists to keep a
watchful eye over the next few days," NRMA president Wendy Machin said in a
statement on Thursday.
Maverick independent Blacktown BP service station operator Marie El-Khoury backs the
plan, saying public pressure is the best way to make oil giants fairer in their fuel
prices.
She has lead several independent Sydney stations in a series of cheap fuel protests
against the big petrol companies and supermarket giants.
Ms Khoury said the financial crisis means motorists were taking careful notice of
petrol prices.
"We've noticed people have been more tight with their money, and that more people
will fill up on the cheapest days," she said.
The NRMA will present the website reports from the public to the petrol commissioner
next week.
"Protecting Australians from a public holiday petrol rip off has become routine for
the NRMA and this June long weekend we want all Australians to help us keep the oil
companies in line," Ms Machin said.
She said motorists had been encouraged to report petrol prices over Easter and
prices were the lowest they had been on a public holiday for three years.
"We know oil companies don't like being watched and after the Easter period we have
no reason to believe they will misbehave this long weekend."
The NRMA says it expects fuel prices to drop to $1.21 on the Monday of the long
weekend.
