Luke paid price for mateship: mourners

The stabbing death of good Samaritan Luke Mitchell was the ultimate example of his
selflessness, his brother Shane told mourners at the 29-year-old's funeral.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland was among 700 mourners who crammed
into St Paul's Anglican Cathedral to farewell the construction worker who was killed
after trying to break up a fight outside a Brunswick nightclub in the early hours of
May 24.
Two men believed to have been involved in the deadly fight where Luke was stabbed
five times are in Thailand after boarding a Jetstar flight the next day.
His brother Shane said Luke had a strong moral compass which distinguished right
from wrong.
He had a complete disregard for his own safety, said Shane, and his attempt to save
someone from being bashed "was the final example of his own selflessness".
"When a person is ripped from our lives for doing the right thing I am left
wondering what is the point," Shane said in his eulogy.
He said it was time for people to stand up for what is right to make Melbourne a
safer city.
"The world needs more Lukes and we should take whatever steps we can to make sure my
baby brother didn't die in vain," Shane said.
The Reverend Liam Matthews said Luke's senseless death was the result of a "cowardly
and malicious act".
"Luke's death on the streets of this city is one death too many," Mr Matthews said.
"We need to find a solution to this problem of knife-carrying and street fighting."
He said Luke died a good Samaritan, paying the ultimate price for his mateship.
Early on Sunday on May 24, Luke intervened as three Asian men attacked another man
outside the Spot nightclub in Sydney Road, Brunswick, in Melbourne's inner north.
He was then driven to a nearby Seven Eleven store where he was going to ring for a
cab and was followed by the men involved in the fight.
They got out of their car and kicked and stabbed him five times while he lay on the
ground. Luke died later in hospital.
Police say investigations into the murder are continuing.
