Japan's Hayashi, ASEAN Counterparts Discuss E., S. China Seas Situations
Tokyo, Aug. 4 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, with China's hegemonic ambitions in the East China and South China seas in mind, voiced strong opposition to the continuation or strengthening of unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force, at a meeting with his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations on Thursday.
Hayashi argued that the assertion of maritime interests should be made under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
Some of the ASEAN-side participants noted the need to resolve any disputes in a peaceful manner based on international law.
Hayashi indicated Japan's eagerness to proceed steadily with specific cooperation projects to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Regarding the situation in Myanmar, Hayashi expressed serious concern over the recent execution of four pro-democracy activists. The ASEAN side also showed strong disappointment at the executions.
The top Japanese diplomat called for the release of detainees and the early restoration of a democratic regime in Myanmar.
On the Ukraine crisis, Hayashi strongly condemned Russia's invasion and said that Japan shares with ASEAN members the view that it is significant to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity.
