Govt to consider Guantanamo detainees
The federal government will consider another request by the US to resettle a group
of detainees from Guantanamo Bay in Australia.
The request was made a week ago and is the third from the US government, but the
first from new president Barack Obama, who has vowed to close the military prison,
Fairfax Media report.
The 17 Uighurs, Muslims from northwest China, have been cleared of being enemy
combatants by the US, which won't send them home amid fears for their safety.
Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said each detainee would be assessed
individually.
"The Australian government will consider this request, on a case-by-case basis, and
in accordance with the government's strict immigration and national security
requirements," he said.
