Kyrgyzstan intends to gradually switch to renewable energy sources

Bishkek, June 16 2022. / Kabar /. In the context of melting glaciers and the reduction of water and energy resources, the Kyrgyz Republic intends to gradually move from carbon carriers to renewable energy sources, primarily hydropower, with the simultaneous introduction of resource-saving and environmentally friendly technologies, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Zhaparov told during his speech at the Second Regional Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals “Beyond COVID - on the way to a fair recovery in Central Asia” in Almaty (Kazakhstan).
He noted that for a “green” recovery after the coronavirus pandemic, a low-carbon transformation of the country and ensuring environmental security, the republic set the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 44% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The construction of small and medium-sized hydroelectric power stations in the country would contribute to ensuring water and energy security for the entire Central Asian region, he said.
The head of the Cabinet called on investors, international financial institutions, climate funds and corporations to mutually beneficial investment cooperation in the hydropower complex and other areas of renewable energy, including on the principles of public-private partnership.
