Debris kills man during Gold Coast storm

An emergency situation in Surfers Paradise, imposed by police after heavy objects
were flung off high-rise buildings on Wednesday afternoon, has been revoked,
Queensland police say.
The winds, gusting at 100km/h, caused the death of a local man.

At around 3.10pm (AEST) police declared an emergency situation on several streets in
Surfers Paradise as a result of the extreme weather conditions.
Police say tables, chairs and even barbecues had been blown off the top of high rise
buildings in Surfers Paradise and Southport on the Gold Coast.
Around 3.45pm police received information a man was injured when a window smashed on
a building in Elkhorn Avenue, in Surfers Paradise.
Initial investigations reveal the 47-year-old man was on the first floor when a
piece of metal struck a window and the man, police said.
It is believed the metal became dislodged from another building during the extreme
conditions.
The Surfers Paradise man was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital where he died from his
injuries.
The Forensic Crash Unit and Workplace Health and Safety Officers are investigating.
