Thai court to rule in August on alleged Russian arms dealer
BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) – Thailand’s Criminal Court on Tuesday announced it will issue its ruling on August 11 regarding whether to extradite a Russian national alleged by the United States as a leading international arms dealer, to serve his jail sentence in the US.
The last witness, Director-General Weerachai Palasai of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Treaties and Legal Affairs Department, told the court that if found guilty in Thailand and the United States and is liable for over one year in prison, Mr. Bout can be extradited.
After questioning Mr. Weerachai, the court set June 30 for closing statements in the case and appearances on August 11 to hear the verdict.
The 42-year-old Viktor Bout was apprehended in Bangkok in March last year following cooperation between US Drug Enforcement Administration and Thai anti-narcotics officials.
The US authorities accuse him of being one of the world’s major arms dealers, He is believed to have supplied weapons to a number of revolutionary leaders, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and the Colombian left extremist Revolutionary Armed Forces in Latin America but he has denied the charges.
