US supports Thailand's stance on Myanmar
BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton supports Thailand’s stance on Myanmar, calling for the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, said Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Chavanond said the US Secretary of State made a phone call to Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya on Saturday to express her support of Thailand’s stance toward the Myanmar government.
Over the weekend the Thai Prime Minister and foreign minister gave interviews to the press, calling for the Myanmar government to pay attention to the health and well-being of pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi.
Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi went on trial at the Insein prison Monday, charged with harbouring a US man who swam apparently unnanounced to her home.
Suu Kyi had been scheduled to be freed May 27 after six consecutive years of house arrest.
The Thai government also urged a fair and transparent trial and called for her release without extension of her detention.
The US Secretary of State did not ask Thailand to do anything and Thailand was not pressured by any side. Thailand’s further action will be considered after the trial is finished and the facts are revealed, said Mr. Chavanond.
Thailand will work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to find a solution to the issue in a meeting of permanent secretaries for foreign affairs to be held in Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket May 19, he said.
Thailand will neither adopt tough measures nor sanctions against Myanmar as such actions would not be appropriate. However, Thailand will support the United Nations and Ibrahim Gambari, the UN special envoy to Myanmar in addressing the problem in Myanmar, he added. (TNA)
