GERMAN BUNDESTAG ADOPTS RESOLUTION ON STRENGTHENING OF SECURITY, STABILITY AND DEMOCRACY IN SOUTH CAUCASUS

Baku, May 15 (AzerTAc). Germany`s parliament, (the Bundestag) adopted Thursday a resolution on strengthening of security, stability and democracy in the South Caucasus region.
Adopting the document, the Bundestag recognizes territorial integrity of all the three South Caucasus countries and supports settlement of conflicts in the region on the basis of the countries` territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The resolution says all countries should recognize the rights of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia to freely select their partners and allies as defined in the OSCE Charter of Paris. According to the document, changing any country`s borders without its agreement is inadmissible.
The document goes on to say that principles of the Charter of Paris ensure countries` rights to territorial integrity and sovereignty. “These principles constitute basis of all efforts to resolve the conflicts in the South Caucasus and other regions of Europe”.
The Bundestag calls on the German government to mobilize its efforts for implementation of resolutions adopted by United Nations on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and OSCE`s relevant documents.
The Bundestag also calls on the German government to increase its efforts to help refugees and IDPs return to their homelands.
According to the resolution, the unresolved conflicts in the South Caucasus can lead to “unwished results” for the region, neighboring countries and Europe.
The resolution also touches upon strengthening of stability, promotion of democracy, restoration of infrastructure in the South Caucasus, cooperation in energy sphere, simplification of visa regime and other issues.
It says the three South Caucasus countries provide link between Europe and Southwest Asia. As energy producer and transit countries, they also play an important role in ensuring energy supplies for Germany and Europe.
Joining the Council of Europe they found their permanent places in a family of European countries.
Strengthening EU`s relations with the South Caucasus countries within the Eastern Partnership program, supporting realization of Nabucco project, contributing to development of infrastructure in the region countries were reflected in the resolution, as well.
During the first parliamentary hearings on the resolution, all factions represented in German Bundestag – Christian Democrats/Christian Social Union, Free Democrats, Social Democrats, Left Party and Greens - condemned the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s territories and underscored that Armenia must withdraw its armed forces from the Azerbaijani lands. They stressed the necessity of settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the basis of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.
The parliamentarians also condemned the fact that in the wake of the ethnic cleansing carried out in the occupied territories people were driven out from their original lands.
