Thai consumer confidence index in April lowest in 87 months

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) -- Thailand’s consumer confidence index continued its nosedive in April this year to 72.1, its lowest level in 87 months.

The slump in confidence is mainly due to worries generated by the Thai political situation and economic problems, coupled with the deterioration in the world economy, said Thanawat Polvichai, director of Economic and Business Forecast Centre at the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Thanawat said concerns over the prevailing high cost of living and the unemployment problem in the country had also depressed consumer confidence in April.

With all indicators in the index below 100, the Centre also forecast that consumption would remain sluggish until the third quarter this year and suggested that the government should come up with new measures to stimulate the economy in the second and third quarter of the year, in order to create more new jobs.

The government should also look to find ways to stabilise domestic politics in order to help recover consumer confidence and private investment going forward, Mr. Thanawat added. (TNA)
