Top US band concert to break down stereotypes
HCM City (VNA) - Grammy award winning band Ozomatli from the US will perform in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong province between May 11 and 15.
The US Department of State and the US Consulate General in HCM City ,
who are sponsoring the event, say it aims to further promote cultural
exchanges and mutual understanding between the American and Vietnamese
people.
Ozomatli vocalist and guitarist Raul Pacheco says the band's performance
in Vietnam is "a unique opportunity to continue to create a new
relationship" that "promises to be fascinating as well".
Saxophonist and vocalist Ulisses Bella adds, "Going to Vietnam is a
huge deal for me personally. It just seems like an excellent opportunity to
break down some stereotypes and promote positive exchange."
The band will hold two performances while in Vietnam . On May 11, they
will perform at 19.30 at My Phuoc Theatre in Binh Duong province, followed
by a performance at 19.30 on May 13 at Lan Anh Club, 291 Cach Mang Thang
Tam Street , in HCM City 's District 10.
The band members will also participate in humanitarian activities to
benefit disadvantaged populations, including programmes at a vocational
centre for the disabled, a school for the blind, and an outreach centre for
people in recovery. On May 14, they will hold a special mini-concert for
disadvantaged groups.
Ozomatli is a multi-ethnic, multi-racial band who show music can transcend
cultural and social boundaries.
The US Department of State has already partnered with Ozomatli to stage
successful tours in Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East . The
tours have received widespread international media coverage.
The band has collaborated with many leading musicians including Carlos
Santana, and their awards and honours include Grammy awards in 2005 for the
album Street Signs ; in 2002 for Embrace the Chaos ; and the Billboard
Latin Award 2004 for Coming Up . Their music has been featured in
Hollywood movies and television shows including The X Files and Ugly
Betty .
