German economic minister heads to Persian Gulf region to boost trade

German Economic Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg departed Berlin Saturday for a three-day visit to the Persian Gulf region, according to press reports.

Heading a major German business delegation, Guttenberg is to hold talks in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) aimed at deepening bilateral trade relations in the energy-rich countries.
German exports to the UAE surged 40 percent to around eight billion euros in 2008.
Both countries have also a strategic partnership.
Guttenberg's talks in the UAE were also expected to focus on a possible financial stake of the Persian Gulf sheikdom in troubled German auto-maker Opel.
The German minister's meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh is to dwell on his country's investments in Saudi infrastructure, including its railway and aviation system.
Saudi Arabia is to invest 400 billion US dollars in its infrastructure by 2013.
German exports to the countries in the Persian Gulf region, among them also Iran, are vital to the continued blossoming of mainly small and mid-sized German companies that are the backbone of Germany's export strength.
