Senators film ad to stop Chinalco bid
The federal government must put a stop to an effective sell-off of Australia's iron
ore deposits to China, Senators Nick Xenophon and Barnaby Joyce say.
The pair have filmed a television advertisement calling on the government to halt
Chinese government-owned Chinalco's bid for an increased stake in mining giant Rio
Tinto.
In the ad Senator Xenophon says Australia must protect its key strategic resources
and urges the Rudd government to block the deal and protect the interests of future
generations. "This deal is not in the national interest," Senator Xenophon said.
"You sell the milk not the cow and we should be selling the minerals and not the mine."
The commercial goes to air on Saturday evening.
